Hot stone or MCT cupping: which add-on should you try?

Both take your massage a step further, but they work in opposite ways: one warms tight muscle, the other lifts it. Here’s how to choose.

Warm basalt stones placed along the back during a hot stone massage

The quick answer

If you want deep warmth and tight muscles that let go without heavy pressure, try hot stone. If you have stubborn knots or tightness that keeps coming back, try MCT cupping. Can't decide? You can add both to the same session.

Hot stone therapy

How it feels: smooth basalt stones, heated ahead of time, rest on key spots or glide over tight muscles in long, warm strokes. The steady warmth soaks in, and tight muscles start to let go with a lighter touch.

Best for:

  • Stiff shoulders and a tight low back that respond well to heat.
  • People who like deep work but not heavy pressure.
  • Grey, damp Pacific Northwest months, and anyone who just runs cold.

Good to know: if a stone feels too warm, say so and your therapist will adjust. Heat isn't for everyone, so if you're pregnant, have a health condition or are sensitive to heat, tell us when you book. More on our hot stone therapy page.

MCT cupping therapy

How it feels: MCT stands for Moveable Cupping Therapy. Your therapist places silicone cups on your skin to create gentle suction, then glides them along your back, shoulders or legs. The suction lifts tissue instead of pressing it down, so it feels like a strong pulling, stretching sensation, a lot like a deep massage in reverse.

Best for:

  • Knots that won't release with pressure alone.
  • Tightness in the back, neck or shoulders that keeps coming back.
  • Recovery after training, a season or a big hike.

Good to know: cupping can leave red or purple circles for a few days. They aren't bruises from pressure, and they fade. Have an event coming up? Mention it, and the cups can stay where your clothes cover. More on our MCT cupping page.

Side by side

  • The feel: hot stone is warm and soothing. Cupping is a pulling, stretching feeling.
  • How it works: hot stone warms muscle so it releases with less pressure. Cupping lifts tissue instead of pressing on it.
  • Afterward: hot stone leaves no marks. Cupping can leave circles for a few days.
  • Adjustable: both. Ask for less heat or lighter suction anytime.

Can I add both?

Yes. You can add one or more add-ons to any 60, 90 or 120-minute session, and the two pair well. If you plan to add both, a longer session gives your therapist room for each without rushing the rest of your massage.

How to add one

Ask for it when you book online or call (253) 537-1162, or mention it when you arrive. Some add-ons lengthen your appointment, so it helps to let us know ahead of time. Call for current add-on pricing, and if you're new to Massage Time, check our special offers: one of them includes a hot stone upgrade.
